Cosmetic eyelid surgery is the removal of the fat mass in the upper and lower eyelids forming excess skin and eye bags. In these operations, baggage and sagging in the lids are removed, giving the person a younger and lively appearance.
In young people blepharoplasty is often used to remove the fatty tissue under the lid. For those in later ages, loss of skin tonicity will also require the removal of excess.
Eyelid surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia. The surgery takes about an hour.
Surgical intervention consists of the removal of an appropriate piece of skin forming the sagging tissue and of the fat mass constituting the eye bags. In the lower eye lid, the surgical scarring is made beneath the lash line. The amount of skin to be removed is carefully marked while the patient is in a sitting position and after removing the marked skin from both eyelids, the excess part of fat deposits in both eyelids is removed. After incisions are sewn, the operation ends.
The eyes should be covered with a moist gauze bandage and kept closed for 1-2 hours after surgery and ice should be placed on top. This reduces swelling and bruising that may occur later.
You may feel some degree of sensitivity and discomfort after surgery. If you feel a slight pain, it can be controlled with painkillers. It is helpful to keep the head high and apply a cold compress in order to prevent swelling and bruises. You will be advised to use eye drops for a few days after the surgery. The blind stitches on the upper eyelid will be removed on the fifth day. The stitches on the lower eyelid fall by themselves.
